Arrival and Departure

By train

Start / Finish Saale source (stage 1 / Münchberg)

Ideally, you should travel by train to Münchberg Station, or alternatively at Bischofsgrün  Station. From Münchberg Station it is approximately 12 km to the source of the Saale. The Source Stone (Quellstein) together with the inlaid source lies on the northern slopes of the legendary Great Waldstein. Take advantage of our GPS routes to plan your journey (Download the GPS Münchberg - Saalequelle and Download GPS Bischofsgrün - Saalequelle).

Start / Finish Saale estuary (Section 9 / Barby / Schönebeck)

The Saale estuary is located just meters away from Barby. We recommend you continue along the Elbe Cycle Path from Schönebeck Station, approximately 16km. From there you have easy access to the long-distance trains of Deutsche Bahn. Alternatively, you can also use the nearby regional train station in Calbe (Saale) Ost. Please download the corresponding GPS route (GPS Download Barby-Schönebeck and GPS Download Barby-Calbe).

Instructions for arrival by train see www.bahn.de (select “Englisch version”). Under the menu item "Services", the item “Bahn & Bike” contains useful information about using the trains with bicycles.

By car

The motorways A9 and A14 offer ideal travel options to the starting point of a stage of your choice. The Saale source can be reached near Zell im Fichtelgebirge on the A9 motorway - exit Münchberg. The Saale estuary at Barby is via the A9 and A14 - exit to Calbe.
